I’d never made him laugh with my writing before – my YA books are rather dark. To start with he was at home, and I could hear him laughing at all the right bits. I sent it to my husband’s kindle chapter by chapter. I set off hopefully, and fairly quickly a story emerged. I just had my main characters in my head – Bea, a whipsmart checkout girl and her seemingly gormless colleague, Ant – and I wanted to find out more about them. No contract, no previous experience of crime-writing, no idea if I could actually do it. When I started to write my new book, The Cost of Living, I was in the happy position of writing for myself. Read on to find out more about cosy crime, and Rachel’s journey alongside her characters, Ant and Bea. She enlists the help of Ant, the seemingly gormless new trainee – but can she really trust him? Customers and colleagues become suspects, secrets are uncovered, and while fear stalks the town, Bea risks losing the people she loves most. Here’s the blurb, to whet your appetites:Īfter a young woman is brutally attacked on her way home from the local supermarket, checkout girl Bea is determined to find out who’s responsible. She’s now turned her hand to adult fiction, and the result is The Cost of Living. The statement added: “Rachel’s family are devastated at the loss of their beautiful daughter who was a gifted student and sportswoman.”ĭidier Jumel, Chief of Police of Val d’Isere, said he accompanied Miss Ward’s parents and brother as they visited the scene of her death.Good morning pals! Today I have a guest post from Rachel Ward, author of the Numbers series and YA thrillers The Drowning and Water Born. “Her body was discovered by a local man and it was evident Rachel had been attempting to climb from the river.” “It is believed Rachel may have slipped into a shallow river and was tragically overcome by the extreme cold and succumbed to hypothermia. She phoned a friend telling him she could not locate the accommodation. “After taking a short cut over the piste, it appears that Rachel became lost. “Police statements confirm that Rachel had not been drinking excessively,” the statement said. The statement said the “gifted” natural sciences student had been enjoying an evening with friends at a pub in Val d’Isere when she had decided to return to her accommodation. Her parents, Edna and Colin, and her brother, Richard, of Halifax, who paid an emotional visit to the scene on Thursday released a statement saying they were “devastated”. Rachel Ward, 20, a Durham University undergraduate, was found dead in the Alpine resort of Val d’Isere on Tuesday morning after falling into an icy river. THE parents of a former Greenhead College student who froze to death on a French skiing holiday have spoken of their agony at the loss of their “beautiful daughter”.
